Last week, I talked about ugly homes, so it seems fitting to talk about magically transforming ugly homes with paint.

Paint: Why It’s So Great

  1. It is an inexpensive way to completely transform things like walls, cabinets, furniture, and bricks.

  2. Anyone can do it. It doesn’t require a great deal of skill to do a decent job!

  3. It’s something to keep you busy while stuck at home.

Here are a few examples of what I’ve recently accomplished with the magic of paint:

Complete Kitchen Renovation
A dated kitchen with light wood cabinets, some left open, and a cluttered countertop. The appliances are older, including a white refrigerator. The space looks worn and in need of an update.

Instead of changing out ugly cabinets which would have cost $3500-$5000, I bought two gallons of paint off of Kijiji. A lady had planned on repainting her kitchen, but never got around to it. She didn’t tint the paint or primer. I bought one gallon of Benjamin Moore cabinet primer, and one gallon of Benjamin Moore cabinet paint.

Actual renovation costs:

  • Elbow grease to clean the cabinets and doors: FREE (1.5 hours)

  • Remove cabinet doors, and turn the basement into a cabinet painting room: FREE (30 minutes)

  • Primer and paint: $40 (seriously) and a three-minute drive from door to door (45-minute investment from source to pick up).

  • Prime two coats: FREE (4 hours)

  • Paint two coats: FREE (4 hours)

  • Hang cabinet doors: (30 minutes)

A freshly renovated kitchen with white painted cabinets, stainless steel appliances, and a modern subway tile backsplash. The countertop and island feature a wood accent finish, giving the space a bright and contemporary feel.

Painted Furniture
Wooden cabinet with carved detailing, a glass-front door, and an intricate scroll design on the glass panel.
Before
The same antique cabinet, now painted white, with the glass-front door and scroll design still visible, giving it a fresh, modern look while preserving its original charm.
After

Time to turn old to new again. I had a kitchen table with six chairs, a hutch, and a credenza that was given to me. My plan was to put them into a furnished rental property.

Actual costs:

  • Cost: Free…well, I had to pick it up, so $10 in gas. The furniture was heavy duty solid wood. If this was new, it would cost upwards of $2000.

  • Paint and Primer combo: $57

  • Time To Complete All Furniture: 10 hours

Transform the Look of Any Room!
